Maria

Review by Therese H

Starring Angelina Jolie; Directed by Pablo Larrain

Overall we enjoyed this film, though perhaps considering it a little "strange". Set during the final week of Maria Callas' life, it vividly portrays her somewhat chaotic life in Paris, overseen by two devoted servants. She is a much reduced figure from her glorious heyday (seen only in flashbacks), addled by a barbiturate dependency which causes her to have vivid hallucinations - presented in the film as really happening. We see how emotionally damaging her relationship with Aristotle Onassis was to her life and career, but, after all, she survived it (and him).

Angelina Jolie's performance is perhaps one of her best, and the film is certainly a moving tribute to a faded diva who remained a strong personality to the end.
