A Complete Unknown

Review by Therese H

Starring Timothée Chalamet, Edward Norton, Elle Fanning; Directed by James Mangold

At the start of the 1960s the young Bob Dylan arrives in New York determined to make a name for himself as a singer-songwriter. He's soon getting noticed on the folk scene, and makes connections with established names like Joan Baez and Pete Seeger. However, his strong individuality and determination to follow his own path eventually see him "go electric", to the shock and horror of his folk fans. Timothée Chalamet gives a riveting performance, alongside the equally wonderful Edward Norton as Pete Seeger and Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez. Elle Fanning plays his on-again off-again girlfriend Sylvie, a fictional version of the real-life Suze Rotolo. Dylan purists may maintain that the whole film is a fictionalised pick'n'mix version of this period of his life - but it undeniably works.
